Why Your Google Business Profile Is Not Showing Your Phone Number

If your Google Business Profile is not showing your phone number, it is almost always one of three things: a setting inside your own profile is hiding it, your edit is still pending or was not approved, or Google itself changed your number after someone reported it as wrong. All three are visible from the Edit profile screen in about five minutes, and only one of them needs Google's help to fix.

Here is how to tell which one you have, in the order that takes the least time, plus the phone rules Google actually enforces.

Is a setting in your own profile hiding the number?

Start here. It is free, instant, and almost nobody knows it exists.

Google has a switch that hides your phone number. From Google's page on editing your profile, the path is: go to your Business Profile, select More, then Business Profile settings, then Advanced settings, and under "Phone number" there is a Don't show option. If that is on, your number is in your profile but customers do not see it. Turn it off and it comes back.

Two more facts from that page:

  • Your primary business phone number is the main contact number, and you can add up to 2 more numbers.
  • Those extra numbers can be mobile or landline, but not fax. A fax number in a phone field is an edit that will not stick.

To change any of it: sign in to the Google Account linked to your profile, go to business.google.com, select Edit profile, update the phone fields and select Save. In the Maps app it is Business at the bottom right, then Edit profile.

One thing to expect: Google says it may contact the verified number on your profile, by call or text, to confirm your business info. If that line rings into a voicemail nobody checks, you can lose the edit with it.

Is your edit still pending, or was it not approved?

If the switch is off and the number still is not there, check the status of the edit instead of making the same change again.

Google gives edits three statuses: Accepted ("your changes are approved and show up on Google"), Pending ("we're still checking your changes. Edits won't appear until they're approved"), and Not approved ("Google can't confirm the accuracy of the proposed edit").

The timing is what catches people out. Google says the review "usually takes up to 10 minutes, but in some cases, it can take up to 30 days." An edit you made Friday that is not live Monday is not broken. It is in line.

If it comes back Not approved, Google's page on what happens to your Business Profile edits says changes may not be approved when Google "can't confirm its accuracy," and that you might be able to appeal. Resubmitting the same edit over and over speeds up nothing.

Did Google change your number for you?

This one surprises owners the most: Google can update your profile info on its own.

The same page says Google may update your profile after it "receives reports that the info is inaccurate," and that when it does you get a notification plus an alert in the Edit profile section. So if your number quietly became an old landline or the number of whoever handles your overflow calls, look for that alert before you assume you made a mistake.

It is also why a wrong number can come back: if it is still printed on an old directory listing, Google keeps being told it is the real one.

Does your number break one of Google's phone rules?

An edit that is not approved twice is usually an edit that breaks a rule in Google's guidelines for representing your business. Contractors trip over the same three:

  • "Provide a phone number that connects to your individual business location."
  • "The phone number must be under the direct control of the business."
  • "Do not provide phone numbers or URLs that redirect or 'refer' users to landing pages."

Google also says to "use a local phone number instead of a central call center helpline number whenever possible," and that "premium phone numbers are not acceptable regardless of the rate charged to the caller." Additional numbers, it notes, "can be used on Google Business Profile websites and other local surfaces," which is where a second number belongs rather than in the primary field.

The honest read for a plumber or an HVAC shop: if a lead service handed you a tracking number, putting it on your profile is a bet against the rule.

What if the number shows for you but not for your customers?

Then it may not be the number. Search your business name from your phone in a private window, the way a customer does. If the whole profile looks wrong or missing, you have a suspension or a duplicate, not a phone field, and Google's page on suspended or disabled profiles is blunt: "Do not create a new Business Profile for the same business," and "appeals can only be submitted once."

For a rejected edit, Google's appeals page sends UK and EEA businesses to the appeals tool and everyone else, you in the US included, to the contact form. Decisions "can take up to 5 business days," do not file twice on the same issue, and the evidence that helps is business registration, a business license, tax certificates or a utility bill whose name and address match your profile.

If the profile is not showing up at all, here is the longer walkthrough: why your business is not showing up on Google Maps.

The five-minute order to check it

  1. Edit profile, Advanced settings, Phone number: is Don't show on?
  2. Check the edit status: Accepted, Pending, or Not approved.
  3. Look for an alert in Edit profile saying Google updated your info.
  4. Read your number against the rules: your line, your location, no redirect, no premium rate.
  5. Only then appeal, through the contact form, with matching documents.

What I do about this, and what it costs

Most owners can fix this alone with those five steps. It keeps happening because nobody watches the profile between jobs.

That is the part I take over. On the Website + Google Profile plan I build the website and keep the Google Business Profile current: hours, services, photos, posts and answers to questions. Being in there weekly is how a changed number gets caught the day it changes. It is $1,000 to set up, then $297 a month on a 12-month plan, or $397 month to month. Already have a website you like? Profile only is $300 to set up, then $197 a month with a 12-month plan or $247 month to month.

What it does not do: I cannot make Google approve an edit faster, and I will not promise you a ranking. The plans and prices are here.

If the number is right and the calls still go to voicemail, that is a different fix: missed call text back, explained.

FAQ

How long does a phone number change take on Google? Usually up to 10 minutes to review, but Google says it can take up to 30 days. Check the edit status instead of resubmitting.

Can I hide my phone number on Google Business Profile? Yes. Under More, Business Profile settings, Advanced settings there is a "Don't show" option. If it is on, that alone explains a missing number.

How many phone numbers can I have? A primary number plus up to 2 more. Mobile or landline, not fax.

Can I use a call tracking number? Google requires a number that reaches your individual location and is under the direct control of the business, and it bars numbers that redirect or refer users elsewhere. A number owned by a lead company fails that test.

My edit was rejected. What now? In the US, rejected business information edits go through Google's contact form, not the appeals tool. Decisions take up to 5 business days, you get one shot, and documents matching your profile are what help.
